How Daniel Radcliffe broke out of prison

CHECK YOUR POTTER PRIVILEGE
“This was one of those scripts that you read and you’re like, ‘How is this not more widely known?’ With my specific career, Potter has afforded me to do my own thing, and I wanted to be part of helping to tell this story. That was enough of a reason for me.”

LEARN FROM THE REAL DEAL
“Tim [Jenkin] is a really fascinating guy. I was very intimidated by him because I really wanted to do his life justice. He’s actually in the film — he came on set for a few days, and we were filming in a real prison, and they put him in prison clothes again. I was like, ‘I guess this is nice?’ But he was totally up for it.”

ACCEPT THAT THE TRUTH CAN BE TOO STRANGE FOR FICTION
“In the film I have to forge a key, so I make a mould and there’s a whole process behind it. But that didn’t actually happen in real life — Tim just looked at the key he needed, went back to his cell and drew an outline from memory. He’s such an amazing guy. [But] we just didn’t think that anyone would believe that in a film.”

Channel 24 interview

Channel 24 interview
TNT Africa will launch its first TNT Original production from the brand-new movies slate. They start with Escape from Pretoria tomorrow, Saturday 4th July.

Website Channel 24 interviewed Daniel about the film.

Daniel says it is an added pressure when the person you're playing (Tim Jenkin) is going to see your work on set.

"It's intimidating, but it's also very useful. These were people who sacrificed a lot and were willing to risk a huge amount for what they were fighting for, for their principles.

"You do have a certain duty when you're telling these kinds of stories. It lights a fire in you to give it your all, every day."

The South African accent is a notoriously difficult one to master. With the help of an acting coach Daniel prepared for this aspect of the character.

"I'd go through the script and I get somebody with a proper South African accent to say everything to me.

"And then I write it down phonetically next to the line in a way that will make me repeat those sounds. Repetition and then hoping for the best."

For Daniel, what this movie means for him, and what he hopes viewers take from it is that it's one thing to believe in equality, but begs the question: What are you willing to do?

"What are you willing to sacrifice? We all like to think that we would be on the right side of history if we are placed in a certain time period. But the reality is, you know, very few people are. And Tim is one of the people who was. I think it's a story that, as you say, now is a good time for it."
