The Huffington Post interview

The Huffington Post interview
Daniel talked on the phone with The Huffington Post about being executive producer on Circus Kid, now streaming on Sundance Now, and more.
“Sorry if I sound out of breath,” a panting Daniel Radcliffe told HuffPost on the phone recently. “I accidentally didn’t notice that I got out on the wrong floor of the building I’m staying in and fully just ran into somebody else’s apartment ... thinking that it was mine.”

“Luckily they weren’t in there. I suddenly just sort of walked in and said somebody’s done something ... and where are all my things? And then just fully sprinted out of the room in blind panic,” he added.
Daniel met Lorenzo during Equus on Broadway:
“I can probably tell this story now because at the time my parents didn’t know that I smoked, but they do now,” he said. “At the time when I was in theater, I would sneak up to Lorenzo’s room and ask if I could jump out on his fire escape to smoke. Again, maybe I shouldn’t be saying this.”

Pisoni wasn’t smoking, Radcliffe clarified. “He was literally like, ‘Yeah, fine, you can use my fire escape.’ I had had my first cigarette before that, but I won’t say when. I will spare my parents’ retroactive disapproval.”

After Radcliffe learned Pisoni grew up in the circus, the former “Harry Potter” actor couldn’t stop pestering his co-star about it. Radcliffe eventually attended an early version of Pisoni’s show, “Humor Abuse,” in which he told the story of his childhood. That sparked the idea behind ― and eventually led to the creation of ― “Circus Kid.”

“He’s had this incredible life, but he’s incredibly grounded and has a level of self-awareness that is not always common in people that kind of know they’ve had extraordinary lives,” Radcliffe said.

Yahoo! Entertainment interview

Yahoo! Entertainment interview
A new interview regarding Daniel as executive producer on Circus Kid. The documentary film premiered yesterday exclusively on Sundance Now (US). Miracle Workers is also mentioned (in which he plays an angel but he is also an executive producer for that project).

Circus Now
is fantastic. It left me wanting to know even more about the Pisoni family.

Oh, good, that’s great! We’ll do a sequel.

You worked with Lorenzo in Equus on Broadway. Is that when you became friends and heard his story for the first time?
Yes, we worked together [on Equus], and I was 19 at the time, and just thought he was the coolest person I had ever met. And he’s cool without trying to be. He’s just a lovely human being, but he’s also extraordinarily talented. He thought on Equus that he was going to be getting, for the first time in his career on Broadway, his own dressing room. And that would have been really nice for him. But, unfortunately, he had a 19-year-old groupie call me, who just, like, invaded his dressing room for the duration of the run. We became very, very good friends. And he’s somebody that helped me; he helped me on that show, but he helped me in my personal life too. He’s been somebody that I’ve often gone to, to talk through things and help keep my sanity. And I like to think that I’ve sort of been a useful sounding board for him at times throughout the years. But also, professionally, he’s somebody that, because he’s obviously, as you’ve seen, somebody so extraordinarily talented physically, whenever I’ve been doing parts that require a sort of physical element to them — the two I’m thinking of are Victor Frankenstein and Swiss Army Man — he was somebody that I would go to to work through ideas with, because I know I don’t mind making a total fool of myself in front of him.

Fox News interview with Daniel Radcliffe

Fox News interview with Daniel Radcliffe
Fox News talked with Daniel about his role as executive producer of the documentary film Circus Kid. It captures the real-life tale of Lorenzo Pisoni’s unique childhood with The Pickle Family Circus. Circus Kid available exclusively on Sundance Now (US), starting today.
“We became very good friends,” Radcliffe told Fox News. “I started learning about his life… and then I became the most annoying [person]… Like, ‘Oh, you were in the circus?! Can you juggle?’ It was annoying I’m sure, but he was very sweet and humored me."
How the spotlight had impacted them over the years:
“I think I'd be hard-pressed to find parallels in our families and how we dealt with it all,” explained Radcliffe. “Lorenzo’s parents are separated. I’m very lucky my parents are still together and are a wonderful team. And Lorenzo went off on his own for a lot of his childhood. I was generally chaperoned by one or the other of my parents… But it all just made sense.

When you’re living in a life where there really isn’t a blueprint for it, there’s nobody you can look to, there wasn’t a family my parents can go and say, ‘OK, so what’s it like when your kid gets involved in a massive franchise?’ You just have to go, ‘Let’s do this ourselves.’… I certainly wouldn’t change anything about my life or how I grew up because it made me the person that I am. I’m actually becoming more and more OK with that person.”

Collider's interview with Daniel Radcliffe
The documentary film Circus Kid is available exclusively on Sundance Now in the US starting today, 21st December. Below you can read Collider's interview with producer Jennifer Westeldt and Daniel, who's executive producer together with Karen Lehner.

Collider:  How did you get involved with Circus Kid?
DANIEL RADCLIFFE: Lorenzo and I first worked together when I did Equus in New York. I think it was the first Broadway show in which he had ever had it in his contract that he would have his own dressing room, which is always a nice thing for an actor. And then, he didn’t get to enjoy that because I invaded his dressing room for basically the entire run. I just thought he was amazing and I wanted to hang out, so he had me, as a 19-year-old groupie going, “Tell me more stories about the circus!

Daniel Radcliffe's holiday book suggestion

Daniel Radcliffe's holiday book suggestion
MarketWatch asked a number of notables the following question: What book do you like to recommend or give as gifts to friends and family over the holidays? And yes, Daniel also answered their question.

Daniel Radcliffe, star of “Jungle”:
“The one book that I have to recommend to everybody at the moment because it’s changing a lot of how I see things, frankly, is a book called ‘Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong and the New Research That’s Rewriting the Story’ by Angela Saini. I feel like you’ll read it and probably buy it for a lot of other people because that’s what I’ve been doing with it. My friend Jesse, who is a female physicist, bought it for me. It’s basically about scientists all the way back to Darwin. A lot of the research that has been done into and about women has been filtered through a very male, sometimes deliberately, sometimes not deliberately, sexist filter of biases. We like to think of science as being above bias but of course it’s not because it’s just human beings. It’s an amazing story of this research and what the information itself is, but it’s also the story of how scientific research is done, how it gets published, how it gets to be in the newspaper. It’s just a fascinating look at that world and I can’t recommend it enough.”

The Wall Street Journal: Daniel Radcliffe on his Harry Potter glasses, his favorite time killers and iPhone imperatives
The Wall Street Journal has put a new article online in which Daniel talks about his Harry Potter glasses, one of his favorite Podcasts, Fantasy Football, and more. The text is edited from an interview by Chris Kornelis.

On his Favorite Podcast
The “How Did This Get Made?” podcast is one of my favorite things to listen to. It’s three very, very funny people talking generally with other very funny people. It’s a dissection of crazy movies, not even necessarily bad ones—though a lot of them are bad movies. What I think I love about it is there’s a lot of respect in the way they talk about the film. They have an appreciation for the fact that getting any film made is basically a victory. They do make fun of them, obviously, but there’s a feeling of celebration about it, which is really lovely. Everyone should listen to it.

On Fantast Football
I’ve got all my fantasy football apps on my phone: NFL Fantasy Football and Yahoo Fantasy Football. And I’m on them fairly constantly. I was going to say from Thursday to Monday, but then I realized that it’s an all-week thing. I’m in two leagues. I know people who are in so many more than that, and I have no idea how they cope. The level of stress it brings into my life as it is…I don’t know how anyone could possibly deal with more than two leagues.

Daniel Radcliffe on Harry Potter Horcrux theory "I feel like that one ― that’s definitely a good one.”

Daniel Radcliffe on Harry Potter Horcrux theory "I feel like that one ― that’s definitely a good one.”
During the press junket for Jungle The Huffington Post brought up this Harry Potter Horcrux theory which popped up online years ago and asked Daniel if it could explain why the Dursleys were so mean to Harry.

Here's what he said:
Oh OK, so it affects the behavior of people around it,” he said. “That’s interesting, yeah.”

Radcliffe continued, “Yeah, that’s definitely the first time I’ve heard that one. It’s definitely interesting because it sort of posits a world where these people only known to be a certain way. Actually if you remove him from the situation, [they] would have been quite a nice, friendly family.”

Having been there for Richard Griffiths’ (Vernon) and Fiona Shaw’s (Petunia) performances,” Radcliffe said, “I feel like it was more they just hated having this kid around.”

“But I think that’s definitely a cool theory,” he added. “Has anyone asked Jo Rowling what she thinks of that one yet? I feel like that one ― that’s definitely a good one.”
J.K. Rowling doesn’t mention if Harry being a Horcrux contributed to the Dursleys’ hatred, but has written about the Dursley’s dislike for Harry on pottermore.com.

Edit: The link above is gone, find the interview here.

ANI:  How was it shooting in an actual Jungle?
DR:  It was great! It was definitely a tough shoot though, particularly for the crew. There were parts of the set inaccessible to trucks which meant that all the camera equipment had to be lugged out by the camera crew or on the backs of these donkey’s we had, which is one of the only animals that could travese those sort of roads. But, yeah it was a kind of crazy, tough filming experience but it was really enjoyable and the cast and crew were great and we like, just kinda got in there together and dug in. It was good!

ANI:  Hey, till the wheels fall off, that’s what I always say. Let me switch gears for our final question. You have a few notches in your acting belt when it comes to horror, but what is YOUR favorite scary movie?
DR:  My favorite scary movie…I think…I think the thing that I remember being really absolutely terrified by as a kid was probably ’The Shining’.  I saw that when I was really quite young and like, a lot of the imagery in that film has that great quality of just being fucking terrifying even though you don’t quite know why and the fact that it’s all so hard to understand makes it even more terrifying. In terms of creating a sense of evil being all around you, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a film like that so well done.

But yeah, my natural inclination is for much less good horror than that, like B movie Syfy channel horror movies, that’s my happy place where I can really relax and watch them. I’m probably into a lot less good horror than you are. ::Laughs::

It was a tough shoot. And it should have been a tough shoot. In the middle of Jungle, we had a week off between filming in Colombia and filming in Australia. I did an interview in that time in person. A few months later, I saw an article that had been written about it. It starts off by saying, "Daniel Radcliffe. Looks. Awful." I went, "What!" TIME magazine sat down with Daniel in London to talk about Jungle. You can find more US interviews here.

TIME: What drew you to Jungle?
The story itself is a survival story, but the thing I found very moving is the notion that there is this kernel inside people that refuses to die. Obviously in this situation, it is in a man surviving alone in the jungle, but I think this indestructible will to live applies to people in war or under terrible regimes and immense hardships around the world. I like to think there is something fundamental in all of us which can get activated when you’re really pushed to an extreme.

New York magazine: 6 things Daniel Radcliffe loves
New York magazine asked Daniel about the jeans, workout shoes, and protein bars he can’t live without for The Strategist.

Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong, by Angela Saini - Amazon link

I always have to have actual books — not out of any sense of snobbery over an e-reader, but it’s just that I need a piece of paper in front of me. I noticed that learning lines off a computer takes so much longer for me. So when I travel, it always looks like I’m smuggling books. Right now, I’m reading this fantastic work of nonfiction about how gender biases have affected how science has treated women. I’d highly recommend it.

Speed Stacks Sport Stacking Set - Amazon link
This is a lifesaver. I actually can’t live without these. Have you ever seen the documentary abut the kids who do speed stacking, Stacked? It’s basically like Spellbound only with stacking cups. I watch practically every documentary I can on iTunes. So I saw the film and became really into the idea of stacking cups, because it’s apparently a skill that you’re the best at between the ages of 8 and 14. I loved it so much my friend actually got me a set and now I’ll practice all the time.

Quest Nutrition Protein Bar, Cookies & Cream - Amazon link
This will sound weird, but I can’t live without Quest bars. When I was doing Jungle, I sort of felt like the character had been lost for a while and not eating a lot and so it felt wrong for me to be eating too much, so the Quest bars were one of the things I allowed myself. I was having a filet of fish and one of those bars a day. Some people are like, “Protein bars taste weird,” and I get that, but I’ve been eating them so long they’re actually good to me. I like the cookies-and-cream and the chocolate ones. What you do is put them in the microwave for 20 seconds and crush almonds or pecans on them, and then they’re a delicious treat. Or you can cut them into mini squares and stick them in the oven.

AEO Extreme Flex Skinny Jean - Amazon link

Jeans are particularly hard to find for me, so most of the good jeans I’ve had have actually come off of sets I’ve been on. I’m five-foot-five and have been for a very long time, so it means I have accumulated a lot of jeans. Right now all I wear is a pair of American Eagles that I got off the set of Imperium.

Asics Men’s Gel-Kayano 23 Running Shoe - Amazon link
I’m obsessive about working out in the morning. I never thought I’d say that, but I actually enjoy the gym, if not at the time I’m there, then at least after I’ve done it. I think this pair of trainers is for running, but I wear them for everything.

Durham’s Bee Propolis 500 mg 120 Capsules - Amazon link
Everyone is always complaining about plane travel doing something bad to them, and I travel so much I feel like I need all the help I can get. I was in a play earlier this year, and everyone in the play was taking it. It seems to be working? It definitely did stave off any feelings of a cold I had during the run of the play. Is it actually bee shit? That’s what I need to know.

Jewish Journal: Why were you drawn to the story and to the character of Yossi Ghinsberg?
Daniel Radcliffe: I pursued the part passionately. Sometimes when a story is true and incredibly powerful and communicates something that’s useful about the human survival instinct, I just wanted to become a part of further disseminating that story into the world.

Forbes magazine interview (US)
Daniel talked with Forbes magazine in promotion of Jungle which will be released soon. But not only Jungle was a subject, he also talked about Star Wars (why we won't see him in it), new projects and more. Read more at forbes.com.

Post-Harry Potter you've done some very interesting films with varying degrees of box office success but which do you think is most underrated or perhaps underappreciated?

DR: Probably Horns, I loved that movie and I feel like that's one that a lot of people were just like, 'What the hell?' but it all made total sense to me. It has really found its slightly cult audience which is always what I had hoped for it. I do get people coming up to me often, heavily tattooed and cool looking people, who say, 'Hey man, I loved Horns' and that means a lot. To be honest, I don't sit back and go, 'Oh, I wish that one had done better or more people had seen that.' A lot of people do judge the success of a film on what it does on opening weekend at the box office and, while that is important and needs to be taken into account, films do find a life beyond that. With Imperium, when that came out originally it did alright and was very well reviewed but then it came out on iTunes or Netflix last year. I was doing a play at the time and suddenly a number of people were talking to me about it and coming to stage door and every night they were talking about Imperium and I was like, 'Why is everyone mentioning this all of a sudden?' As long as a film finds its audience it sort of doesn't matter to me exactly when it happens.

There is the running joke that every actor in the UK got to star in the Harry Potter movies over the years or a Star Wars movie. When are we going to see Daniel Radcliffe appear in a Star Wars movie? Has that come up at all?

DR: I'm sure probably not but I don't know, it's not come up. I certainly wouldn't be averse to it but I would also be surprised. I would be surprised if they would want that to happen. Most of the time, if a director says, 'Oh, I don't want him in this because he played Harry Potter,' I don't think that's a good reason not to cast me in something but when the thing you are essentially casting somebody in is another massive franchise, I think to have somebody that is very recognized from another franchise might be weird and distracting like we were doing some weird Harry Potter and Star Wars crossover movie.

Updated(3): Daniel Radcliffe is again a guest voice on The Simpsons
Yes, again! Seasons 29 of The Simpsons will kick off tomorrow, 1st October 2017 at 8 pm ET/PT on FOX and this time Daniel has a guest role playing himself. Talking about this you might remember the photo Hank Azaria shared on Facebook back in June which I have added below.

Entertainment Weekly talked with Al Jean, executive producer of The Simpsons, and he revealed the following info.
Daniel Radcliffe returns to the show as himself in an episode about Bart using Sun Tzu's The Art of War to destroy Homer. "They go to a Minecraft-like convention and Daniel is there wearing a costume," explains Jean. "That’s how people like him go to conventions without being seen, and Homer unmasks him, and he gets torn to shreds."
It hasn't been released yet in which episode Daniel will appear.

Update:
5th March 2018. I have announced on Facebook that Daniel will appear in the episode called No Good Read Goes Unpunished. Air date will follow.
Update: 12th March 2018. The episode will air on 8th April 2018.
Update: 15th March 2018. Fox's press release.

Daniel Radcliffe is again a guest voice on Robot Chicken

Season 8 of The Walking Dead opens on 22nd October 2017 in the US and Adult Swim will air a Robot Chicken Walking Dead special called Look Who’s Walking on 8th October 2017 (at midnight).

Several The Walking Dead stars have recorded lines for this episode including Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Sarah Wayne Callies, Jon Bernthal, Lennie James, Steven Yeun, Scott Wilson, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Michael Rooker, and Josh McDermitt. In this episode they sing 'The Terminus song' but they had to look for replacement for actor Andrew. J. West, who played Gareth in season 5 of The Walking Dead, says director and writer Tom Sheppard [Yahoo!]
“When we were going out to the actors from the show, the agent for the actor who played Gareth [Andrew J. West] from Terminus said he doesn’t sing,” Sheppard says. “So Seth put a call into Daniel Radcliffe…”

“As one does…” Meyer jokes.

“Yes, like you would do,” Sheppard continues, “and basically we had Daniel Radcliffe singing the Terminus song.”
And that means that Daniel has a guest role in this episode.

Teaser trailer (was shown at the San Diego Comic-Con) which features a part of Daniel singing the Terminus song:

Another Japanese interview appeared online today in promotion of Swiss Army Man (スイス・アーミー・マン). It is the fourth interview regading the Skype session and again it features a new photo by Yukitaka Amemiya.

Translation by Daniel J Radcliffe Holland.

- What kind of movie did you think this was when this role offer came?
Radcliffe: I first thought about setting this role, "I want to do it" I thought. I thought that it would be a very unique buddy movie like Samuel Beckett wrote. At first it was such an image, but it was magnificent that I was surprised to see the completed movie. Indeed it is a unique story with a strange story, but I did not imagine it would be a scaled work.

The third Japanese interview in promotion of Swiss Army Man (スイス・アーミー・マン) in Japan and also with another photo by Yukitaka Amemiya. This is the interview from the website called 'Cinemas by Shochiku" and I assume this is also from the "Skype press day".

Translation by Daniel J Radcliffe Holland.

I was surprised by the unexpected development and screenplay I haven't seen before. Where were you attracted to it? Please tell me the point where my heart was caught.

Daniel Radcliffe (Daniel): Of course I thought that the unique place is interesting. However, there are many strange things in the screenplay that was sent to me. However, there are few things that are strange but can become masterpieces. This work is not intended to be promoted as "strange" because I want to be "strange". I was attracted to it and wanted to do it instantly.

A quote from the interview (there are only a few quotes in there as far as I could tell by translating, this is the one we haven't heard before):

Translation by Daniel J Radcliffe Holland.

"There is a romantic side (to their relationship). I think that it's not love, especially after having a party in the forest, it looks like they are going to kiss, but Hank will kiss Manny later, when Manny saves Hank's life in the water, I kissed Hank, and until now Manny hasn't experienced kissing so Hank gave him that experience."

Cinema Today interview (Japan)

A new interview appeared online: Japanese website Cinema Today released their exclusive interview with Daniel in promotion of Swiss Army Man (スイス・アーミー・マン) .

Translation by Daniel J Radcliffe Holland (part of it).  Full article here.

Q: It was a surprisingly beautiful and deep movie. After seeing the movie, I am convinced why you wanted to do this work, but it is still a corpse. Did you not hesitate at all?
I really did not hesitate. I read the script and it is very strange but wonderful, I thought it was very beautiful like you said. So, "Oh, if I play the corpse, what do you guys think?" I never thought that, I just thought "I must be part of this movie". And they (The Daniels) made a really beautiful movie. I knew that there was that potential, but when I saw the film when it was actually completed, they felt that they had used the body's joke and very beautiful and deepest stories.

Q: How did you create the role? Since it is a corpse, you should not blink, you can not stand up on your own, and you can not use facial muscles when you are speaking.
For most of the role I was thinking, what would it be like if this happened in real life? And to use the imagination. Also I sent a lot of videos to the Daniels in which I had a strange face and a strange voice. And when I went to the set and saw the dummy being made (to use as corpses), I felt "I already know what to do". Because I was not able to prepare and research much, I just switched off my power and trusted myself to the movie world.

Daniel talked with The New Indian Express' Indulge magazine in promotion of Swiss Army Man. The film premieres on Star Movies Select HD on 12th August.

Where did it all begin with you? Before it all hit — Harry Potter, the movies, plays, etc.?
Ha ha! A lot of people ask me that. I grew up in Fulham, South West London, I had a very happy childhood, I wasn’t particularly good at school, and I was very talkative.

That’s what all the reports said — “We like Dan, he talks too much and his reports are rubbish.” And I was never in a school play. I recently read on my own IMDB page that I wanted to be an actor since the age of five, which I don’t recall being true. I was five! My opinion about what I wanted to do when I was at that age changed hourly, so it was never something I was driven towards.
