Dan talks Harry and tips from J.K. Rowling
In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Dan talks about how his perception of playing Harry changed during the years and the tips he got from J.K. Rowling.

EW: You were 11 when you were cast as Harry Potter, who was already a global phenom. Did you feel pressure?
Dan: If I had been older and slightly more self-aware about the following that Harry had, I would have been slightly more intimidated. Ignorance and confidence of youth- it's enough to transcend that.

EW: How did you go about creating Harry? ANs how has your perception changed over the years?
Dan: In the beginning, creating the character was all about the costume and the look. That's how people thought of him. In terms of what I did to prepare, it was very much: Just learn the lines. I'm aware now that there are so many different ways to play any one line.

EW: What makes Harry interesting for you to play?
Dan: That he is not perfect. He's capable of being quite arrogant, quite stubborn, pigheaded, and a little bit selfish. He can make himself something of a martyr when he really doesn't have to. All those characteristics are wonderful because it separates Harry from the archetypical superheroes hat you so often get in children's literature.

EW: Has J. K. Rowling offered you advice on playing Harry since the first film?
Dan: I did ask her for some advice on the fifth film. I talked to her about Harry's emergence as the leader of Dumbledore's Army. She said that it was very important because it's the first time we see Harry be a leader, and eventually he's going to have to lead large numbers of people.

EW: If you could have spent your adolescence playing any other character, who would it be?
Dan: I was always unbelievably jealous of Tobey Maguire playing Spider-Man. I do think Spidey is the coolest of superheroes.

Updated: Radio Times interview (UK)
Daniel recently spoke about his transition from being a star from his success in the Harry Potter films to a working actor after he's completed work on the series next month in Deathly Hallows. The full interview can be found in Radio Times.
‘It’s bizarre. Most working actors want to become stars. I sort of am a star because of Harry Potter.’

‘And I would love to become a working actor. I love auditioning. But, to be honest, I’m happy to ride this as long as it goes,’ he continued.

‘If it goes for two months after Potter, I’m happy. If it goes for six years, I’m happy.’
Dan also mentioned that if acting doesn't work out for him, there are other film-making avenues he would consider pursuing.
‘I truly believe that if I don’t make it as an actor, I will make it another way – I don’t have doubts about myself. I’ve been through all the stuff.’

Daniel's announcement for the Trevor Project

Daniel's announcement for the Trevor Project
Daniel recorded a public service announcement (PSA) back in February for The Trevor Project in New York.

Press release:

LOS ANGELES (May 18, 2010) /PRNewswire/ — The Trevor Project, the leading national organization focused on crisis and suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, announced today the launch of a national public service announcement (PSA) targeted at LGBTQ youth. The PSA features Daniel Radcliffe, the star of the “Harry Potter” film series, Broadway’s “Equus” and the upcoming revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Newsrooms and broadcasters are encouraged to download the broadcast-quality (MPEG-2) PSA available on the panel to the right, and the video can also be easily embedded onto websites, blogs and online news outlets.

“MTV News” offered an exclusive first look at the PSA on the channel on Mon., May 17, with the full-length version running exclusively that day on “MTV.com.” The piece raises awareness about The Trevor Helpline, the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for LGBTQ youth. Radcliffe delivers a touching message to youth, reminding them that there is always a safe place to turn, and encouraging those who are feeling lost or alone to call The Trevor Helpline. To conclude, Radcliffe says: “be proud of who you are,” a vital message for LGBTQ youth to hear. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15 to 24-year-olds, and LGBTQ youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Those who come from a family who rejects their sexual orientation are up to nine times more likely to do so.

“LGBTQ youth suicide is a preventable epidemic, and at The Trevor Project, we know that community education is the key to combating these devastating statistics,” said Charles Robbins, executive director and CEO, The Trevor Project. “Because this PSA features Daniel Radcliffe, it has the incredible power to educate communities and spread the word to youth that help is always available and that it is okay to reach out for support.”

Daniel Radcliffe has been involved with The Trevor Project since August 2009, when he joined the Circle of Hope, a community of major donors which plays an essential role in the financial leadership that makes the organization’s lifesaving work possible, with a significant donation. He has since continued his involvement, taking a tour of The Trevor Project’s East Coast Call Center in New York City this February during which he met with staff members and volunteer helpline counselors and also filmed the PSA.

“I believe that The Trevor Project has a universal mission of acceptance that is so profound,” said Radcliffe. “If this brief PSA makes even one lost and alone young person aware of The Trevor Helpline and the lifesaving support it offers, then it will have been an endeavor well worth making.”
