Updated: Broadway Cares: Gypsy of the Year competition

The cast of Equus was the top Broadway fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) this year. There are now photos and videos from the Gypsy of the Year performance.

From broadwaycares.org:

The cast of Equus featured star Daniel Radcliffe performing an original song, written by Mr. Radcliffe, entitled “The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Neigh” that included the show’s “horses” dancing and cavorting with their young star.

The $203,746 raised by the cast of EQUUS, enthusiastically lead by Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths, is the most raised by a Broadway play in the history of BC/EFA fundraising.

Updated: Dan included in book The Waiting Game

Daniel is included in a book about British Theatre actors during the thirty minutes before they go on stage. Daniel is captured during his run of Equus at the Gielgud Theatre in London (2007). The book is called The Waiting Game by Simon Annand.

Update: March 2012. Daniel's portrait is featured in Simon Annand's exhibition called The Half at the Idea Generation Gallery in London until 8th April 2012. You can also buy his book, which seemed to have changed from the above title to 'The Half'.

More photos via snitchseeker.com: Here and here.
“I wrote to Daniel’s father, who is also his manager, saying that some people in the book started their working lives in the Twenties and he was the youngest person in the book. He was becoming part of a tradition in the theatre and that meant something to him. He’s very serious about his work. Even though he’s carried these multi-million pound movies, he’s also a 17-year-old like any other. So I had to talk a lot during the shoot. We talked about cricket.”

Teen magazine interview (US)
Teen magazine interviewed Daniel, Emma and Rupert about Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Below the questions they asked Daniel.

What's the kissing scene like between Harry and Ginny Weasley?
I think Bonnie (Wright, who plays Ginny) was maybe a bit nervous, and I probably was, too. It is very much the case that it's nowhere near as exciting to film those scenes as people would imagine them to be. I hate to disillusion everyone.

Did you give Rupert any advice on his kissing scenes?
I wasn't there because they filmed the actual kiss after I had gone home one day. I couldn't watch it and laugh at him, which was deeply annoying. I love watching the scenes where Lavender swoons over Ron. I think there's a little bit of Rupert looking embarrassed, which makes me really laugh.

Is it fun filming a movie that has a little more romance in it?
I prefer the dark stuff to be honest! The romance is fun and it's something people will really enjoy, but I personally like doing stuff in a cave where I'm close to death. It's a lot easier than romance.

What was a funny moment onset?

Rupert, Emma and I displayed a total lack of professionalism because we could not stop laughing during one scene, and we didn't know why. I think it was partially because I had just seen a piece of film footage of a monkey in a little uniform riding a bicycle and I was thinking about that. I shared that with Rupert, which was a terrible thing to do because he started laughing. And then I think Emma just thought, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em."

Daniel and Kim Cattrall spoke to TV Guide about their roles in My Boy Jack. Kim from her home in New York and Daniel from the UK set of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

TVGuide.com: My Boy Jack was a hit in England. What’s it about?
Kim Cattrall: It’s a story about how war affects a family, in this case the writer Rudyard Kipling’s family during World War I. I play his amazing American wife Carrie.
Daniel Radcliffe: For my character, Jack Kipling, it’s about finding a source of escape from his famous father. He must overcome physical problems that could keep him from joining the army, because he wants to prove himself to be a man. It’s quite relevant today.

No Dan related news, but very shocking.

BBC News reported this morning that Rob Knox, the actor who plays the role of Marcus Belby in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was tragically killed late last night in London. Robert Knox was stabbed to death while intervening on behalf of his younger brother just outside Metro Bar on Station Road in Sidcup. Belby is known to Harry Potter fans as the Ravenclaw student who aspires to be a part of the Slug Club. It's horrible that something like this still happens in the world. Daniel feels Deathly Hallows split is a positive move.
Warner Brothers has annouced that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be split into two parts. Below a quote from Dan regarding this publication.
"I think it's the only way you can do it without cutting out a huge portion of the book. There have been compartmentalized subplots in the other books that have made them easier to cut -- although those cuts were still to the horror of some fans -- but the seventh book doesn't really have any subplots. It's one driving, pounding story from the word go."
Official Press Release

TV Guide has more on the Deathly Hallows split! Dan calls it a "positive thing" and that he thinks the fans will appreciate that more than trying to fit the book into one film and having to skip over elements. He also says it will be a challenge finding the right place to split the film, and that it will start shooting early next year and be filmed as one movie.
"It's a really positive thing," the actor told TV Guide during a call to promote Masterpiece Classic: My Boy Jack (airing April 20 on PBS).

"And I think the fans will appreciate that more than had we tried to make it into one film. We'd have to cram so much in there and actually have to skip over some things. And in this seventh book, there are a lot of things you can't afford to skip over."

"There's a lot of stuff flying around about this at the moment. I am absolutely attached to it and it would be amazing to play that part. But people are making assumptions about when it's going to happen and it won't happen – if indeed it does happen – for a while yet." Daniel Radcliffe, Bob Hoskins, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters have joined the campaign to save the Bush Theatre from a grant cut which threatens its future.

Bush Theatre Campaign
Open Letter from Bush Theatre Supporters
We the undersigned, as supporters of The Bush Theatre, ask Arts Council England to reconsider their proposal to reduce funding to The Bush Theatre. The Bush is a unique and vital force in the development of new plays and playwrights in this country. For thirty-five years it has played a leading role in identifying new talent, developing new plays and producing new work that questions and defines contemporary Britain and our changing world. Last year, over a hundred thousand people saw a Bush production – that success is built upon The Bush Theatre's experienced support and nurturing of playwrights, actors and directors. If British plays and playwrights are to continue to be the envy of the world, they must be supported and championed in this country. London needs a small and properly funded new writing theatre dedicated to discovering new writers and producing new plays. We urge you to reconsider your commitment to playwrights, theatre practitioners and future audiences by allowing The Bush Theatre to thrive, not just survive.
